As I look at society today, I can’t help but ask the title question. The overall message of King’s Dream was equality. Race, sex, class and others are but branches of equality that we have to achieve balance in. Have we transcended all of these to form a more perfect union? Yes and No. On the surface, our country has made huge strides in equality.

Majority of the country regardless of what you look like or how much money you make vote in elections, we all can have the opportunity to make money, we have the option to marry whom we please, and we have a member of the minority as President. These are surface achievements that often hide the truth path of equality in America.

New voter laws threaten to disparage and put at a disadvantage certain groups, certain candidates come out in the open with racial and class hatred; people are still killed because they may not share the same moral and fundamental values, and these are few of many things in today’s world that we still face. Granted we’ve made great strides, but these incidents threaten to take us back to a time where equality wasn’t the top priority in this nation. Take us back to dark times, violent and turbulent times in our history, that we’d rather forget than relive. It’s been said that if we don’t learn from history, we’ll be doomed to repeat it. That statement rings true as several laws that guaranteed equality are suddenly being retracted, certain freedoms we once had are disappearing.

There have been several battles throughout history in the name of equality. Native Americans, Women, African Americans, Asian Americans, and our current battles with Hispanic Americans, Homosexuals and Class warfare, have all had their moment in the sun with their fight for equality. As a powerful nation, it should be us that set the example for the world. Instead we’re divided by politics and little differences and our country looks like a kindergarten classroom, full of short sighted ideas and immaturity. Who’s to say blacks and whites can’t be friends, that a man can’t marry another man, that because you’re white you’re entitled to the best or because you’re poor you shouldn’t have the same as a rich man? Who dictates these rules?

St. Augustine once said “An Unjust Law is no Law at all”, in saying this many issues with trying to become equal or trying to save your rights are unjust in the eyes of those that make the laws, but the reaction they give is unjust as well. There is a thin balance, right now in this country, razor thin. Any little thing can tip the scales in either direction. Either we move forward into the future or get buried in the past.

There once was a man on a quest for greatness

One thing stood in his way

He spent most his life searching for that one thing that held him back

He’d always blame others for his shortcomings

Losing love and friends along the way

His life was destructive, because he over endulged

He seemed to lack dicipline or be in touch with reality

In his mind he made others happy, but all they really wondered was if he was ok

He’d boast and brag and hide from the truth

But deep inside he longed

He hurt

Thing about hurt is it grows

It consumes

It can destroy

He sat one day

All alone

Thinking of why his life seemed to be in shambles

In a moment of clarity

He saw the truth

The truth was he was his own worst enemy

He was what held him back

He was the other half of his failed relationships

He was the reason for many of his ills

In his search for the truth

He found a startling revelation

Truth seekers often try to find the truth

They have to be prepared to accept it for what it is

He accepted this truth

I can no longer pretend my heart has turned cold

When the embers still burn red hot

I can no longer deny the passion I feel

The loneliness is felt on a daily

I wonder what the feeling feels like again

The feeling of being loved and loving back

What does my future hold?

I miss the feeling

The feeling of being wanted

Desired

Loved

But am I truly ready

Or is it loneliness speaking again

We that strive to BE

Strive to achieve regardless of where we were BRED

Regardless of the tragedies we endure or the hard times we FACE

It is WE the Last Percenters WE who are SELFLESS

No SELFISHNESS

We’re the percent that the 1% FORGOT

The 2% who fight for FREEDOM

The 12% that society enslaved and REPRESSED

We’re political FODDER

The ones to which religion PANDERS

The ones that hope for a better DAY

Not just hope, but take steps to make that hope a REALITY

Our 15 minutes comes and goes, but it ENDURES

It has staying POWER

They can’t silence our VOICE

That can’t stymie our DRIVE

They can only watch us WORK

Watch us ACHIEVE

Create policies and laws as ROADBLOCKS

But as the Great Maya Angelou said “Still I Rise”

The light still SHINES

We are collectively POWERFUL

Divided we FALL

That seems to be the GOAL

But we live to fight another DAY

We are the Last PERCENTERS

The voice of the Past, Present and FUTURE

As I sit and stare at the sunshine shining

It doesn’t seem to make it’s way my way

Leaving my life shrouded in darkness

I stare at happiness as I percieve it

I see the couples kissing

The kids playing

All the while I sit here alone longing for the love

That light to shine my way

I often imagine myself with another

Dancing and swinging in the sunshine

While our little ones sing to a melody only they know

We caress

We kiss

We love

But that feeling is suddently gone

The clouds covered the sun

Blocking my happiness

Stealing my sunlight

Moments of clarity as the drunks call it

A moment when you realize the path of your life

When you realize you are truly grown and in control of your destiny

A destiny not controlled by anyone but yourself

I seek love like every other, just don’t acknowledge it

Yes, maybe I’m in denial, but it is stress free

Except when I am really in need

When I realize man is not meant to be alone

I love hard but love often fucks me

Hard with no loving often fucks me

Having its way as I drown in misery

One day I shall find the path to my destiny

But for now I’m just living life as it comes

I realize I’m an angry young man

A man that has a daughter and a responsibility to raise her as a respectable woman

That I will do with the help of God

With the help of my family

With the assistance of my friends

I love hard

My moment of clarity is making money and loving with all I have

Regardless of the outcome

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 6,700 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Hidden in the Words

Does she really want he real?

Does she wants the pain that coms with reality?

Joy comes in the morning

Or so they say

You’re alive so that’s joy enough

But what do they really want outta life

Life is for the living, not the dying or dead

So spend most of your life getting the bread

Aka money

Hidden in most books

That’s the secret

Learning what success feels like

Cause all most niggas will give you is dick and that’s it

I’m spitting knowledge

Love breaks the dawn

But all we feel is the pain of hate

Hate that breed’s violence against out fellow man

Wish I could love freely

But it’s all just bittersweet

Life is a making of a fantasy you make reality

Reality you may not be truly ready for

But you still have to face

It’s all so bittersweet

Cause without love you can’t have hate

Both breed unstable humans seeking completeness

Seeking life that they believe everyone has

But to no avail

Everyone seeks the same and only have the perception of happiness

Happiness crafted by humanity

But are we truly happy?

Are we truly dreaming or just emulating what someone else calls success

Marriage and relationships the biggest sham or truly a need for human existence

It’s all so bittersweet

Without one the other is irrelevant

Birds fly freely or so we think, they follow the crowd to the destination sought by another

Bittersweet

Is love an illusion or a necessary thing for survival
