Tony L. Jefferson, Jr.
The shade of our skin brings forth many misconceptions
Years of pain and suffering, couldn’t tarnish our soul
We are a proud people and any challenge we overcome
Our style is often imitated, our swagger can’t be touched
So beautiful and unique, so joyful and full of life
Our spirit can’t be rivaled
Words flow from my mouth and inspiration flows from my pen
They both tell a story of where I began
From the jungles of Africa
To the beaches of Haiti
To Urban America
Our story is long and deep
Our storied past will never be forgotten
Or uncertain future will continue to improve
Don’t hate one of your own, when they are doing their best to succeed
Fight for them, empower them, and rise up from oppression of the mind
In closing I leave you, with this one thought
If we can’t stand together as a people, we will fall as a race

Thank you for sharing your poem. IMO the last two lines say it all. Best wishes for a smooth transition when you return home.
