Through the darkness we rise

With roots deeper than the ocean floor

Those roots trace back to Kings and Queens

Mighty warriors and great esteem

From our head to our shoes we are a wonder to behold

Feared as a culture and clouded in mystery

With swagger and confidence we reign supreme

But our soul weeps from years of oppression of our mind

Trapped in a jail cell of our own ignorance

Our spirit shall weep no more

For we stand strong and unmatched in will

A fire moves within us

Burning with desire

Fueling our emotions

From the ashes we rise

Like a phoenix reborn

We got soul

Hidden behind our exterior

Our body but a shell

Our mind but a cage

Soon to reveal our inner strength

Our soul will be set free

We got soul

Calamity of the Poetic Mind

The flow of my pen

The curve of my script

Blends the confusion of thoughts

Expressed by a mad man on a mission

Genius and insanity are kissing cousins

These unique words intertwine in your mind and bend your thought process

They weave a story

They weave a rhyme

Sprawled across a blank page are words

Plucked from the realm of my unconscious

Randomness travels from a neuron to the landscape of paper

Like an artist on a canvas I paint a tapestry with my words

In a trance I write

Hypnotized by the inspirational muse that finds me that day

Emotional

Emotionless

Each feeling draws a verse from the pages in my mind

I laugh at the absurdity of my mind as a book

The greatest story never told

These poems are pages of an unwritten masterpiece

From the outside in

From the inside out

The world we see has gone crazy

Lost its ever loving mind

Gone are the days of prosperity

Forgotten is the struggle of our forefathers

Was it all a dream?

Is our existence morphed into this twisted reality?

We are susceptible to lies

Threatened by fear

I am enraged by all that I see

My pleas are ignored

My vision disputed

The blind eyes don’t see the tragedy unfolding

Our people turn to others and chastise their own

Dismissing where they come from

Ignorant and close minded we become

Common sense is lost to our society

Eroded by the constant saturation of stupidity

Bring me a change

Open up our minds

Unlock our hearts

We see the tragedy but fail to change our destiny

“If we don’t learn from our past, we are doomed to repeat it in the future”

On the 8th day, In October of 1985 I drew my first breath in this world. This world was so new to me, full of wonder and amazement. A birthday is something special, kind of like your own holiday, but more than that it is a beginning of a new age. Some people see this as insignificant, but I truly cherish this day.

So I turn 23 today, for some just another number, but for me another year that I was able to make it to. Many events have transpired up to this point and turning this age reminds me of how far I have come and prepares me for the road ahead. I am truly learning what being a grown man really means.

Being a Grown man means you are able to handle what life throws at you. You are able to weather most any storm. You are prepared to provide for you and yours; you have learned to respect women and elders. You have truly lived and are on top of your game, but you are humble enough to stay grounded to your values and beliefs. You command respect and you give it equally.

No longer are you the immature young one running around without a care in the world. You have responsibilities and goals to achieve. No longer are you the “Player” you are now the “Seeker” you are looking for a quality mate to settle down with. High school games stay in high school, there is no place in the Adult world for such antics.

A Libra, the Zodiac sign for my birthday in October, is supposed to be balanced and romantic. We also are supposed to try to find balance in our surrounding environment, when things are out of whack, no one feels it more than we do.

Happy Birthday to me, this special day I am happy to see. I’ve arrived yet again to another age and I am excited to see what it will reveal for me.

Anger builds

Tension rises

Emotions flare

My thoughts turn sinister and visions of evil play scenes in my mind

 Everyone’s a fucking target

Everyone gets what’s coming to them

Violence overtakes my body

I become its tool of destruction

Feeding off of the energies of the weak and pitiful

Fuck them all and fuck them twice

The devil has come to roost and I’m bringing my all

I strike all that oppose me and bring ill will to all

I am the bearer of bad news
the angel of deceit

The spoiler of the good life

My goal in the world is simple

To make each and every person miserable

Make them feel horrible

Depressed

Hopeless

I will do whatever it takes at whatever the cost

 Fuck the Good Samaritan

I’ll leave your ass to die

I’ll kick sand in your teeth

My boiling point has been exceeded

I enjoy your suffering

You are dirt under my feet

Something to be pitied

 Blood is rushing

Hormones are jumping

Adrenaline is pumping

I want to turn your smile upside down

I want to make your day the worse ever

The always soulful Lauryn Noel Hill is one of the most prolific artists of our time. Always an avid writer, her soul stirring songs has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Hill has an amazing voice and the topics of her songs are the defining point of her work.

Oppression, love, passion, heartbreak, is just a few of the many emotions she touches on in her songs. She has won many awards and accolades, but these pale in comparison to how her words have changed millions of lives. Her true poetic soul invites us to feel where she is coming from and gives us advice on how to reach our divine goals.

Yes, Lauryn Hill is, in my opinion, a poetic genius. Her ability to touch millions, her passion for her work, and her continued effort to write a change in society will forever be remembered. Her poetic expressions are truly felt.
