sat in a tree

By: Tony L. Jefferson, Jr.

I climbed up in a tree one day to sit and think awhile

So many thoughts passed at that time overwhelming me and I almost fell down

A voice told me to be strong and I caught hold of myself

I looked around to find said voice but it was then I realized I was all alone

I sat back upon that tree to think again and at that moment another voice I did hear

It said, “Why do you sit and think instead of pursuing the thoughts that you think”

Started but not moved I responded

“I’m afraid of what the world might think, it’s a harsh place full of let downs and negativity”

The voice responded loud and clear

“If you worry about what’s thought of you, you’re wasting your precious time, because whether or not they think or not you have to stay on your grind”

“Come down outta that tree my friend and start your life anew”

“Cause the more you sit and ponder, opportunity passes you by”

I said, “Starting today I am a man of business, a man of action, a man chasing destiny”

“Outta this tree I came today to do what’s best for me, and along the way I hope to help someone the way this voice helped me”

Off I went to do my calling

Never to sit and ponder

About life’s daily struggles

We fight for another

One another

And another

The voice of the masses

Matching might and wit

Conquering all enemies foreign and domestic

We sacrifice a lot in defense of our nation

Our lives, our families, and our sanity

Nevertheless, we do it without complaint

Who else would take on such a mighty responsibility?

Three hundred million vs. two million

Young, strong freedom fighters

Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen

Twenty four seven

Three sixty five

Through fire and ice

Through blowing sand and bullet storms

We fight

Not because we have to

But because it is a duty we swore to uphold

Lives torn

Lives lost

Veterans return to a different home

Applaud, congratulate, and embrace us heroes

We are freedoms patriots

Protecting and serving

You

Behind the bars of my mind

My words are my only freedom

Freedom to dream and create

With these words written

I create my own paradise

Where birds fly free and people have love for one another

But that’s my fantasy

Reality sets in when you peek through the bars of life

Trapped inside my mind

My words struggle to break free of the stigma of ugliness found in life

Situations arise that test my durability

Test my strength

But I rise to the occasion

Open to the opposition

It can drain my physical being but my soul remains strong and intact

Still when I awake from my long slumber

I remain trapped within the confines of my mind

open-my-heart

Mesmerizing melodies entice my senses

Once dead feelings are ignited again by your warm embrace

I long to feel whole again and this time must be right

Past relations teaches that these feelings of love don’t last

They rush in like a raging river and go out like a dying hurricane

Destruction of the heart is the after affects of this emotion

This time is different

This time is true

Cause when I open my heart once more

I’m gonna harness that feeling of floating butterflies

Feelings growing strong like the tree of life

No sin shall harm this paradise

Indestructible hearts burning with the fires of lasting love

So easily broken unless both sides form a deeper bond

I pledge my trust to you

I uplift you spirit with my everlasting love

I make your heart and mind explode with passion and pleasure

So many questions invade my thoughts

But day after day you answer

Your actions tell me a story

Your personality the most caring of all

Your touch so full of love and caring

Your smile warms the heart from the cold winds of despair

Matters of the heart are tough to deal

But to you I promise to open my heart once more
