As I look at society today, I can’t help but ask the title question. The overall message of King’s Dream was equality. Race, sex, class and others are but branches of equality that we have to achieve balance in. Have we transcended all of these to form a more perfect union? Yes and No. On the surface, our country has made huge strides in equality.

Majority of the country regardless of what you look like or how much money you make vote in elections, we all can have the opportunity to make money, we have the option to marry whom we please, and we have a member of the minority as President. These are surface achievements that often hide the truth path of equality in America.

New voter laws threaten to disparage and put at a disadvantage certain groups, certain candidates come out in the open with racial and class hatred; people are still killed because they may not share the same moral and fundamental values, and these are few of many things in today’s world that we still face. Granted we’ve made great strides, but these incidents threaten to take us back to a time where equality wasn’t the top priority in this nation. Take us back to dark times, violent and turbulent times in our history, that we’d rather forget than relive. It’s been said that if we don’t learn from history, we’ll be doomed to repeat it. That statement rings true as several laws that guaranteed equality are suddenly being retracted, certain freedoms we once had are disappearing.

There have been several battles throughout history in the name of equality. Native Americans, Women, African Americans, Asian Americans, and our current battles with Hispanic Americans, Homosexuals and Class warfare, have all had their moment in the sun with their fight for equality. As a powerful nation, it should be us that set the example for the world. Instead we’re divided by politics and little differences and our country looks like a kindergarten classroom, full of short sighted ideas and immaturity. Who’s to say blacks and whites can’t be friends, that a man can’t marry another man, that because you’re white you’re entitled to the best or because you’re poor you shouldn’t have the same as a rich man? Who dictates these rules?

St. Augustine once said “An Unjust Law is no Law at all”, in saying this many issues with trying to become equal or trying to save your rights are unjust in the eyes of those that make the laws, but the reaction they give is unjust as well. There is a thin balance, right now in this country, razor thin. Any little thing can tip the scales in either direction. Either we move forward into the future or get buried in the past.

There once was a man on a quest for greatness

One thing stood in his way

He spent most his life searching for that one thing that held him back

He’d always blame others for his shortcomings

Losing love and friends along the way

His life was destructive, because he over endulged

He seemed to lack dicipline or be in touch with reality

In his mind he made others happy, but all they really wondered was if he was ok

He’d boast and brag and hide from the truth

But deep inside he longed

He hurt

Thing about hurt is it grows

It consumes

It can destroy

He sat one day

All alone

Thinking of why his life seemed to be in shambles

In a moment of clarity

He saw the truth

The truth was he was his own worst enemy

He was what held him back

He was the other half of his failed relationships

He was the reason for many of his ills

In his search for the truth

He found a startling revelation

Truth seekers often try to find the truth

They have to be prepared to accept it for what it is

He accepted this truth

Perceptions skewered by preconceptions

Enriched by hatred and racism

Stoked by the powers that divide

Why must we bend to the will of money?

I’m classy but in the wrong class

Apparently I’m only second class

Rich folks won’t even give me a second glance

Tell me I’m over qualified for work that good ole boy is qualified for

Shit we had the same credentials

But I excelled further

But they couldn’t see that while looking at my color

Cause I didn’t have an Armani suit

Cause my watch didn’t bling like Rolex

Cause I came from an area where the crime rises higher than the buildings

Now lying defunct and abandoned

Why hath thou been forsaken?

Reganomics ruined my economics

But that’s not an excuse

Cause at my heart I’m a hustler

Out for my piece of the pie

The American dream is but a myth crafted by Wall Street

With our blank check from China

Off the backs of the poor and middle class

Whom they also call second class

Cause first class get’s the lobster and shrimp

While I’m in the back eating stale pretzels

No Pay=No Work

There is definitely a class system in the America and the military seems to be at the very bottom of it. The military trains and fights to keep the country safe, continue the American way of life and stand up for what’s right in the world. At the same time we are people too. We have families, children, wives, husbands, mothers and fathers. We are not machines nor are we zombies. I don’t know a person in this world, who would work without pay and they shouldn’t have to in this day in age. It’s 2011 after all and the old ways of doing things are all but obsolete or so we would think. Whenever our country calls us to duty we deliver, but when we need the country to support us we are often times left in the dark, with no support and no answers. Only questions of our livelihood, how to feed and clothe our families, how to make this thing called life work for us as well. We deploy to countless foreign countries spend years away from our loved ones, make sure our country is secure and prosperous, only to come back and get shafted by the system that isn’t designed with us included. We’re second class citizens, the true minority. Yes, this is a thankless job, we all swore an oath to defend and protect, but we deserve to be treated as humans, as people who breathe and care, as equals. We’re not bred to die, we’re born to live. How dare you cast us down, overlook us, discriminate against us when it is us that makes you who you are. Thank a veteran; congratulate a military member on making it back from a warzone safely. Visit a VA and see the sacrifices we’ve made for the country and the people who live in it. Visit a memorial and see the countless names on the walls that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. So please talk to your congressmen. Tell them we don’t care if they are Democrat or Republican; tell them to think about the have-nots for once. Tell them that on April 8, 2011 we need a budget that works for the people. Millions of family’s wellbeing depends on it.

I know in the past this blog has mainly been about poetry. Well, I realize people need more content, more of an experience. So while not steering away from the main theme of the site, which is poetry. I want to incorporate other things like a daily newsletter, quotes that I make up, pictures from wherever I travel, etc. So to start this thing off I want to tell you about my experience with being a new father.

It was love at first sight. As soon as I stepped off of the plane, we locked eyes and our worlds changed forever. I’m talking of course about my first time seeing my daughter Olivia. This was my first time physically seeing her, as she was born while I was deployed to Iraq. Months and months of pictures, email, and Skype at come down to this moment. It is a moment I will cherish as long as I live.

Olivia might look like an adorable little cutie that wouldn’t do any wrong and she is at times. There are two sides to Olivia from what I have seen thus far. They are what I call her Diva side and there is the Olivia side. The Diva side comes at a moment’s notice and it involves a lot of crying, catering and almost overwhelming frustration. You’d be amazed at how someone so little can cause so much strife. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The Olivia side involves smiling, laughing (oh what a cute little laugh), and lots of play time.

There is another side that doesn’t involve her physically. That is the parent/business side, where I and her mom Sara, pay bills, buy food and lots of diapers for those stinky times. The whole mechanics of this whole process is overwhelming at first, but after awhile it is routine. Having a little girl isn’t easy, but I know that this is only the beginning on our long journey.

Now the only part I am dreading is those Teen years. OUCH!

An inaccurate portrait is often painted about the Tea Party. They are often portrayed as racist, which isn’t all of the way accurate. I think of them more as narcissists. They are completely oblivious to the fact that their rhetoric is offensive to the rest of the country. Sure they rant about big government, high taxes and the like. This however is just a cover for the real agenda of the Tea Party.

These same folks totally ignored the rambunctious spending of the Bush era and not even a month after Obama was in office, they started to complain. Their message “we have to take America back” is often chimed time and time again. What exactly are we taking America back from or to? Is it the fact that minorities are progressing in this country after so many years and the majority is shook by the revelation that a Black man took the Presidency? Yes and no. President Obama taking office did enrage many conservative Americans and historically most conservatives in America are white Americans.

Let’s get back to government spending. Tea partiers and other conservatives often challenge the Medicare system. A few of the Tea Party hopeful’s one being Rand Paul are physicians who benefit from Medicare payments to doctors. He is also an opponent of Medicare spending except when it pertains to himself. At most Tea Party rallies the crowd consist of people who benefit from the same thing they are protesting against Medicare. When asked about this they often get confused and say some don’t deserve the help, but they are living large off of government spending. The average Tea party person is sincerely against government spending – with the exception of the money spent on them. This confusion and lack of understanding is essentially how most of this political party functions. Confusing and misleading the average American by playing on their fears and emotions.

The master manipulator Sarah Palin is a prime example of this. People have all but forgot how much of a pawn she was in the VP race and how absolutely ridiculous her arguments were in debates and on issues affecting the country. Now out of nowhere she is a wise ole sage, an experienced stateswoman, and the supposed leader of the Tea Parties misguided movement.

What the party is playing on is the fact that majority of Americans are misinformed or totally oblivious to what is going on in the country besides the bias they hear on the news. Yes, the government is overspending as it always has done, this isn’t a new trend. Just as the economical mess were in isn’t a new trend. The economy goes in cycles, which is standard data. Us poor and middle class Americans didn’t know a recession was going on till rich Americans started complaining. The middle class and the poor have been in a recession for most of our lives. It’s only when a few dollars started getting snatched out of the wealthy Americans pockets that they became enraged. When the President stated that we should let the Tax cuts expire for the wealthiest Americans and keep them for Middle America. They went on a smear campaign engaging those same Americans with lies and conspiracies. Socialism this, communist that, too liberal, to biased, anti business etc. The wealthy preached to the middle class and the poor about how evil the government is and how by forcing rich people to pay their share of the taxes is wrong and stops job growth. Unfortunately the average American ate those lies up.

Corporate America, Wall Street and other big companies started lying off workers, not so much because they are hurting for money to pay these people, but to make a statement disguised as they are losing money. If the Tea Party actually believed in what they preach to us and actually had real solutions instead of ways to cut help to the majority we would actually pay attention. Spending cuts in education, public works, welfare or Medicare isn’t exactly the right solution to solving the deficit problem. The truth is the deficit is always going to be high and we will never pay off that imaginary number. In order to create jobs and not just getting by paycheck to paycheck jobs but good paying jobs, you have to invest in education. You have to have public works such as construction, police, fireman, etc., and since the Tea Party objects to the Healthcare Plan we Medicare and welfare don’t hurt. What we need is better oversight on these programs. Fire all of those corrupt politicians and misguided souls and replace them with a diverse, intelligent, group that actually cares about the country as a whole instead of just themselves and votes.

All in all the Tea Party like so many other grassroots organizations isn’t bad for America, but they aren’t exactly helping the cause if they continue to preach the ugly, racist, biased, non conforming bullshit that other politicians do. This is just one organization, but right now they are the most prominent.

If America continues to fight against each other and not come together for the common good, nothing will ever get accomplished; our enemies win in the end because we can’t get along. The beauty of this country is its diversity, its moral obligation o do what’s right such as end slavery, establish women’s rights, and protect civil liberties. If we continue down this road we’re going, we’re no better than the countries we pick wars with.

Let me start by saying that I am not against Israel or Jewish people. I have no ill will toward Jews, Arabs or to my beloved country the United States of America. This article is only for discussion purposes and I am open to any opinion or fact presented in this discussion.

As history has shown us, the current country of Israel wasn’t formed till the year of 1948. Before that time the current land was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, who also controlled a large area of Arab territory.  The current state of Israel was called Ottoman Palestine and was occupied by people of Arabic decent.

It wasn’t until 1917 when Britain took control of the land that Jewish immigrants began moving into the land. Britain supported the creation of a national home for the Jewish immigrants in Palestine. From the formation of the country of Israel till present day Jewish and Arabic people have fought over land where, in antiquity, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah had once been.

The United States has never in its 200 plus year history received any economic, military, strategic or tactical assistance from Israel. The United States for some reason still strongly supports Israel, but this support often jeopardizes our relationship with other countries, including Israel’s presumed enemies. So why is it we support Israel if we get nothing in return?

In my opinion it’s the similarities in the religion of most Americans and the country of Israel. The Christian faith of most Americans directly stems from the Jewish faith of majority of Israelites. We believe if we don’t support Israel we will come under the wrath of God for forsaken his chosen people, whom the present day Israelites claim to be. This often puts us at great risk of acquiring the same enemies that Israel has. The Arabic countries turned away from Israel because of its land dispute with Palestine whose people are of Arabic decent. One problem with this is that the US has huge oil dependence and majority of the world’s oil supply lies in the Arabic countries.

Since the beginning of our support for Israel, Americans have been the target of extremist attacks from some Arabic countries. Instead of playing favorites, we should be a neutral entity. Although strategically and economically it would benefit us to be allies with the Arabic countries, that would only cause a whole set of new problems. As the worlds current superpower we should set the example of working together for a greater good.

I believe a neutral status would further help Israel and Palestine form two separate countries and in turn Islamic extremist wouldn’t target us as much and we could have a better relationship with the Arabic countries. This could be a huge economic advantage for the United States. Anti-American sentiment stems from our favoritism of Israel. These two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and Iran’s current attitude towards Americans might have been prevented, if our foreign policy was of a neutral entity trying to unite the two countries and stabilize the whole region of the Middle East. In my opinion Israel only shares a similar religion with America and benefits the US in no other way. This should not classify them as our strongest ally. Becoming a neutral country would be one of our best foreign policies.

abundant life

As I reach another year of life

I can’t help but wonder what’s next

Will I live to see 25?

Will I live beyond the call of time?

At these times of the year

I remember words said to me

They always seem to lift my spirits

“Live Life Abundantly”

Words

Almost like a mantra

That when spoken help us to realize our true worth

That no matter the circumstance

No matter the life change

We must always remember

To live life to the fullest

Live it the way that’s best for you

“Live life abundantly”

red and blue

Scratch the surface of me

And you’ll find out what I am meant to be

A tiny voice hidden in a mass field of voices

Struggling to be heard by at least one

That one will tell another and another will tell another

That one day what was written by one inspired a generation

A lost people

A lost soul

To fight back against lies spoken and written by people that love misery

With greed they try to conquer your thoughts

Helping you to make decisions that do benefit you

But instead line their filthy pockets with all your hopes and dreams

Right wing conspiracy vs. Left wing controversy

Two sides fighting for their version of right

But what about the people that matter

Us

We

The supposed United States broken up into Red and Blue

Why not join to make Purple states

Where the Red and Blue join together to make one

Converging ideas that make the ideal of the United States seem right and true

Politics sicken me

Politicians I despise

We elected you and we can take you away

Support each other for the betterment of US

For the betterment of WE

For the continued success of the United States
